Uganda claimed a 5-0 win in their opening match of the All Africa Senior Championships at the John Barrable Hall on Monday afternoon, which is a perfect start to their continental campaign.
A 5-0 victory against Mozambique in their opening tie was a good statement from Uganda, who are looking to clinch gold in the team events at the All Africa Senior Championships tournament.
In the Men’s singles, Uganda’s Kasirye Brian beat Iddrisse Issofo 2-0, while Husna Kobugabe beat Mozambique’s Afrika Matsinhe in the Women’s singles with the same result 2-0.
Head coach Ivan Kalimunda credited day one’s performance against Mozambique to the two weeks of residential training that was held at Ndejje University’s main campus, and the players’ ability to follow the team’s strategies.
Amos Muyanja and Kenneth Mwambu registered a 2-0 victory over Iddrisse Issofo and Paulo Mutondo in the men’s doubles as Glades Mbabazi and Fadilah Shamika emulated them to beat Mozambique’s Jessica Almedia and Afrika Matsinhe in the Women’s doubles.
A duo of Brian Kasirye and Fadila Shamika also delivered a 2-0 victory against Paulo Mutondo and Jessica De Almeida in the mixed doubles, to complete the tie’s 5-0 victory.
